When we give ourselves compassion, the tight knot of negative judgement starts to dissolve, replaced by a feeling of peaceful, connected acceptance – a sparkling diamond that emerges from the coal”

(Kristin Neff)

Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) training combines the skills of mindfulness with self-compassion, providing a powerful tool for emotional resilience. This is an empirically supported 8-week course developed by Christopher Germer, mindfulness teacher and psychotherapist, with Kristin Neff, a pioneering researcher and professor at the University of Austin, Texas. Eight 3 hour classes and a half-day retreat support you in growing your self-compassion through meditation, daily life practices, reflective exercises and discussion. A workbook and unique guided meditations complement the in-class learning – a commitment to some cultivation of the approach in between sessions is essential.
With Mindfulness we develop the capacity to be able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. By cultivating and deepening our self-compassion we can then respond to these difficult thoughts and feelings with kindness, sympathy and understanding. This restores a sense of well being and ease, reducing anxiety, depression and the nagging underlying insecurity that is familiar to so many of us. As our ability to experience compassion for ourselves increases, so does our ability to relate to others in the same way.
